A dramatic one-hour standoff ended safely on Wednesday morning after Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) operatives rescued a 52-year-old woman and captured an armed ex-convict who held her captive inside a residential apartment.
The Eastern Police District (EPD) identified the suspect as alias “Ed,” 43.
Authorities revealed that the suspect, who was recently released from prison, allegedly orchestrated the incident because he wanted to be sent back to jail.
Police confirmed that the suspect and the victim had no prior relationship or personal connection.
The crisis began around 9:30 A.M. on September 16, 2026, when a concerned manager of an apartment building along E. Pantaleon Street in Barangay Barangka Drive reported an ongoing hostage situation in a second-floor unit.
Officers from Mandaluyong CPS Substation 4, the Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit (TMRU), the Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU), and the SWAT Team rushed to the scene.
Responding units immediately cordoned off the area and established a perimeter to initiate negotiations.
During the one-hour negotiation process, the suspect demanded media coverage while holding the victim at knifepoint.
Recognizing a brief window of opportunity during the standoff, SWAT operatives breached the room, swiftly subduing and arresting the suspect before he could harm the victim.
Police recovered a fan knife (balisong) from his possession.
Following the tactical breach, both the victim and the suspect were transported to the Mandaluyong City Medical Center for medical evaluation and necessary treatment.
The suspect now faces formal charges of serious illegal detention and violation of Batas Pambansa Blg. 6 for illegal possession of a deadly weapon.
EPD District Director Police Brigadier General Roman C. Arugay commended the responding units for their restraint and tactical execution, emphasizing that the team’s swift action prioritized the preservation of life and ensured the victim was rescued without sustaining further injury.
