THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) underscored its commitment to regional stability and international maritime cooperation this week through key diplomatic engagements and joint defense exercises.
On September 16, 2026, PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan welcomed a Japanese parliamentary delegation led by Senate Vice President Tetsuro Fukuyama aboard the flagship vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701).
The engagement served as a platform to discuss operational perspectives and reinforce the longstanding maritime partnership between the Philippines and Japan, built on training, capacity-building, and mutual security interests.
The high-level visit closely followed the PCG’s participation in the 20th Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA), held from September 12 to 13 in the West Philippine Sea.
Represented by BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406), the PCG joined forces with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the U.S. Pacific Command, and the Royal Canadian Navy—including the Philippine Navy’s BRP Diego Silang (FFG-7) and Canadian Warship 3347.
The two-day exercise focused on enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), communication protocols, division tactics, and joint response capabilities.
Designed to improve operational interoperability among partner nations, the joint drills aim to deter illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive (ICAD) activities in Philippine waters while safeguarding regional maritime security.
