RECOGNIZING the vital role of the internet in modern education and daily communication, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is intensifying its initiatives to foster a safer digital environment for children and young learners across the region.

NCRPO Officer-in-Charge Police Brigadier General Christopher N. Abrahano emphasized that while avoiding the digital world is neither realistic nor necessary, children must be properly equipped and guided to navigate cyberspace safely.

“Hindi natin maiiwasan na maging bahagi ng online world ang ating mga anak. The internet is now an important tool for learning and communication.

What we need to ensure is that our children know how to use it responsibly and that they have adults who will guide and protect them,” PBGen. Abrahano stated.

To combat online risks, the NCRPO stressed that digital safety requires a collaborative approach involving families, schools, communities, and law enforcement.

Authorities issued practical guidelines for parents and guardians to protect minors:

  • Monitor Online Activity: Stay aware of the accounts, platforms, and content your children access regularly.
  • Promote Critical Thinking: Teach kids to spot online scams, misinformation, and inappropriate material.

  • Protect Personal Data: Emphasize the importance of never sharing private information, locations, or passwords.
  • Enhance Privacy: Help children set up strong passwords and configure proper privacy settings.
  • Exercise Caution: Remind minors that online acquaintances may not always be trustworthy, and prohibit unauthorized in-person meetups.
  • Establish Boundaries: Empower children to refuse requests for inappropriate or private photos.
  • Keep Communication Open: Encourage children to report uncomfortable experiences immediately, and listen without judgment, blame, or shame.
  • Report Threats: Actively block and report dangerous accounts or harmful content through proper platform and legal channels.

PBGen. Abrahano highlighted that open, non-judgmental communication between adults and minors remains one of the strongest deterrents against online exploitation and abuse.

Furthermore, local police units have been urged to deepen partnerships with schools and child-protection stakeholders.

“Our goal is not to keep children away from the internet. Our goal is to help them navigate it safely,” PBGen. Abrahano concluded.
