THE Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong officially launched its Musical Theater Class on September 1, 2026, introducing performing arts into its growing suite of inmate rehabilitation and personal development programs.
A total of 53 persons deprived of liberty (PDL) from various camps and dormitories participated in the inaugural session.
Organized under the facility’s Sports and Recreation Program (SRP)—also known as the Sports, Physical Education, Arts, and Cultural Entertainment (SPEACE) section—the class aims to provide inmates with a creative outlet to develop artistic skills, build self-confidence, and foster discipline.
Artistic Director Marck Anthony Nery led the opening workshop.
A Theatre Arts graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman, Nery is an experienced theater practitioner and the founder of the Multi-Skilled Individuals for Culture and the Arts (MUSICA) Society, which operates across the Philippines and Canada.
Drawing from his background in acting, choreography, writing, and stage direction, Nery guided the participants through introductory exercises designed to encourage self-expression, team collaboration, and focus.
The initial session was monitored by CO2 Jennifer D. Danao, Chief of the Sports and Recreation Program, and CSO1 Jeanette S. Juaton, Chief of the Reformation Section.
Program organizers noted that the class will feature regular workshops, skill-building sessions, and theatrical performances as it progresses.
The project was realized in partnership with David Amansec Ocampo, CEO and Founder of Dreamlab Studio Talent Management Services, alongside support from CIW Deputy Superintendent for Reformation C/CINSP Elsa M. Martorillas and Acting Superintendent CT/SINSP Lariza V. Martin.
According to CIW officials, incorporating the performing arts into inmate management strengthens the facility’s holistic reformation framework.
Beyond custodial supervision, the program seeks to equip participants with valuable interpersonal skills, broadened perspectives, and emotional resilience to assist in their eventual reintegration into society.
